In a conversation people generally take their turn when speaking. Within the context of conversational AI and chatbots this concept is the same. The user says or types something (user input) and the bot reacts to the user input (bot response).

A turn is made up of the user input and the bot response.

The user input can include:

• sending a text message to a chatbot
• using voice to communicate with a chatbot
• interacting with a chatbot using rich elements such as buttons or images

The bot response can include:

• sending a response to the user in the form of text, buttons, or images
• speaking a response to the user
• performing an action, such as a backend integration with an external system or handing off to a live agent
