Each time a user interacts with a conversational AI application the user’s utterance may contain valuable information that can guide the conversation.
This information is continually parsed by the conversational AI application and makes it possible for a chatbot to ask clarifying questions, recognize information that has already been supplied or even start entirely new dialogs.
This capability is known as slot filling.
For example, consider a scenario where a user wants to place an order for a pizza.
The conversational AI needs to know what is in the order to process the request successfully. The user can supply this information at various places in the utterances. The places are called slots.
